The Legend of voice, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He rests while his voice casts the spell.

Interview with NFAK.com

Question:What is your favorite song?
Nusrat: “Allahoo” because it is in praise of Allah (God).

Question:What does “Mastt Qalander” mean? Who is “Ali Ali”? Why do people go into trance-like states when they hear this song? Is there any symbolism between this song and the life of the son-in-law (Ali) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?
Nusrat: Mastt Qalander is a high ecstasy of spirituality in which you lose yourself. Ali is the son-in-law of the Prophet (PBUH). He was a caliph in the early years of Islam.

Question:Nusrat has often mentioned his late father in interviews; and I am curious as to what he sounded like - are Ustad Fateh Ali Khan’s recordings still being (re)issued and available?
Nusrat: As far as I know my father’s recordings are still available. Also some will soon be reissued on audio tapes.

Question:What is the title of the song that Nusrat and Peter Gabriel performed at the VH1 Honors Concert?
Nusrat: The song was “In your eyes”.

Question:Which recording of Mastt Qalander” is your favorite?
Nusrat: The original version (unsynthesized).

Question:What are the place, date and exact time of birth of Nusrat and his nephew Rahat Ali Khan?
Nusrat: Both were born in Faisalabad. Nusrat was born on 10-13-48. (More answers as we get them!)

Question:Is it true that Nusrat sang at Baba Farid Shrine in Pakpattan?
Nusrat: Yes, as he often does during the Islamic month of Moharram.

Question:Your music is made up of a lot emotion - what drives you to your passion when performing?
Nusrat: Sufism and Islam are the basis and subject of my singing. The love of Allah (God) and the praise of his Prophet (PBUH) are my sources of my passion.

Question:Is the “Ustad Fateh Ali Khan” on the ECM release “Raga and Saga” with Jan Garbarek your father?
Nusrat: No.

Question:How do you feel about people of other faiths?
Nusrat: Every soul has the right to live and worship his or her Creator. Sufisim is a message of affection and tranquility to bring different people together. People of God understand this message. It is my mission to share this message all over the world.

    Welcome

I’m writing an article about Nusrat for Polish avant-guarde magazine Glissando.
I’ve known his music for years, but very recently i’ve realized what an amazing personality he was.

His music is like a lantern - it lights my way in a dark night of life, it shows me the way.

I believe and I will follow the greatest of the greatest. Allah please help to giude everybody in the world and bring love back to our hearts. Only you know how much we need to stop the hate and bring world at peace. If it’s through music……. Nusrat is the one who can do it. That’s why we have to take what Nusrat has given us and run with it, stretch it as far as we can. We are here and now, only we can spread Nusrats music throughout the world.

    Hi…….
Ustad Nusrar Fateh Ali Khan is still a legend. The greatest gifts he gave to the music world are his music and his nephew whom he trained. It is difficult for many skilled singers to even touch his scale. I wish Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will follow his uncle’s path.

I love Nusrat and his songs. Especially qawalies, like ye jo halka halka suroor hay, tum aik gorakh dhandah ho, kitay ishq da rog na la baithin, and many more. His music just casts a spell on the listeners. We will all miss him, remember him and love him throughout our lives.
