My favorite Qawwali by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has to be “Saanso ke mala pe.” I’ve heard two different versions of it, and while they are different in tempo, the Qawwali has such ecstatic and mystical energy. The lyrics are so beautiful and profound that it certainly deserves to be repeated throughout the Qawalli.

Is it possible to pick one? I don’t think so. All the qawwalis are evergreen. It has been over six months and I have just one cassette, with three qawwalis by the Great One, in my car. I have played it hundreds of times when I am driving and have never felt I had enough of just those three numbers. There are a few at my home and a few at my work and I never have felt like playing anyone else’s voice.

Every performance of him is impecable. And his blending of sufi and classical music is perfect. It’s hard to pick the bests, but my favs are his early pieces. The top 3 are:

I speak no urdu
But after reading the translations they are even more touching.

My Nusrat favourite changes week by week. Last week it was “Mustafa ya Mustafa”, the week before it was “Mein rohan te nu yaad karke” and this week it is “Ali maula Ali”. My very first Nusrat favourite was, like many other people, “Ye jo halka halka suroor hain”. I am planning to enlarge a picture of Nusrat to really gigantic size, frame it in exquisite copper and hang it on the wall of my drawing room. He inspires me as noone else can. It wouldn’t be too far off the mark to say that I am passionately in love with him!

I think everything by Nusrat Saab is amnazing…but i perticularly like the ones which r a little fast and is about love or friendship.
mostly all these songs have 2 versions…a long and a short one…i prefer the longer ones cause in the shorter one by the time u r into the song it ends…

I was just going through my collection of nusrat on the ipod..and i have about 75 songs by him.and there r a few cds by nusrat with me which i have not yet loaded on the ipod.once i do that , i am trying to take out a way by which i can save all the files into one folder and then upload it on the net for everyone to download…i was just wondering if it possible for everyone to do that so that we can have 1 huge data bank on the net with probably the largest collection to nusrat songs…it can be like our tribute to the GREAT MASTER….what do u guys think?

All of his qawwalis are wonderful, even though I understand little Urdu and no Punjabi. However, I like these best: Tumhain Dillagi bhool, Tum ek Gorakh Dhanda ho, and Kehna Ghalat Ghalat to Chupana Sahi Sahi.

Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is and will forever be my favorite. His Nephew Rahat is quickly coming down his path, but not quite there yet…will never be but is still good. My fav is GHAM HAI YA KHUSHI HAI TU, TUMHEIN DILLAGI BHOOL JANI PADEGI, and AAKHIYAN UDEEK DIYA….amongst all others…may his soul rest in allah’s lap.
