High Tempo Qawwali

This is the most powerful and ultimate Qawwali clip in this Audio Gallery. You won’t beleive how powerful and rich performance you can get with musical equipment of less than $200. Nusrat and Rahat are both at peak of their performance, expressing their love with the Prophet.

One of the amazing thing about this clip is that it was composed in realtime during a live performance and hence it could not be found in any of his studio recordings. The poetry in this clip was randomly taken from some other songs and this portion was inserted in middle of Qawwali during height of their emotions.

Another amazing telent of Nusrat can be heard at 0:40 of the song, where he takes a randomly chosen sentence at a randomly chosen beat of the ongoing rhythm, glides that without syncing it to the current rhythm, and then beautifully adjusts the delivery speed to precisely end that at the right time, perfectly syncing it again with the rhythm.

I have never seen this kind of a performance, from anyone else, at a high tempo. Nusrat was definaltely a master at juggling with the rhythms.

Kindly feel free to leave your comments on this clip.

Their musical equipment is likely from 200 parallel universes… I am so impressed with the careful work of this site, worthy to frame the brilliance of this musical light. I have been addicted to it for the last 3+ hours, and completely delighted I’ve “ruined” my day in this manner.

    Hello all,

Congratulations for this excellent website. I hope you will develop it further with many more audio and video samples. Now, I know this might be an effort, but maybe useful: could we have the lyrics in their original script, transliteration and translation? (perhaps indicating further reading on several sufis the verses of whom are being used?) Nusrat’s music has been a powerful inspiration for me to try to learn Urdu and Punjabi (although I am from Eastern Europe). I somehow find it much more enjoyable if I can also “sink” in the verses, not only the music.

For some reason I particularly enjoy when he mixes the two languages like in the first video you have here. If I understand correctly, after “besakhta us waqt zaban se meri nikala” he switches to Punjabi, his mother tongue (he also seems to be singing much better when he uses Punjabi - but this is just a personal observation). It would be interesting to examine why he does this ocasionally: here I would say that the description part is in Urdu, and then, when the poet actually repeats his own words, he speaks Punjabi.

All the best and congratulations again.
